Christmas giving

Posted by wayne on Dec 24, 2004 in Family |

For the last several Christmases, Gretchen and I have given toys to an organization that our church works with to send toys to impoverished children around the world. Due to my travel schedule and some other commitments, we missed the opportunity to do that this year.

However, I stumbled across a website that did something similar for children in Iraq. While it is not Christmas focused, the goal is similar. It is called Operation Iraqi Children and it was started by actor Gary Sinise and author Laura Hillenbrand (“Seabiscuit”). We’ve put a link to their website on the left. Basically, they realize that our soldiers can build a lot of goodwill and help the Iraqi people by providing basic school supplies for Iraqi children. We decided to put several packages together and send them. Here is a shot Gretchen took while I was packing them up.

I’d encourage everyone to check it out and see if they can make a donation. It only costs about $10/kit so we’re going to try to send a few kits on a regular basis. Merry Christmas!!

This is what Christmas is all about – giving! We will be checking the website to do what we can as well.
Even though we had an unusual Christmas, it was satisfying in that we helped serve the Christmas dinner at our church to people who were grateful to have somewhere to go and someone to talk to on Christmas Day. Someone made the comment that the people who came to eat were staying longer than they had anticipated. I think they were glad to have good food and companionship on a day that can make the lonely and depressed more lonely and depressed. If we helped someone get through the day with a couple hours of our time, it was well worth the effort. I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and we look forward to the next. And we need to try to remember that Christmas isn’t just once a year but should go on the entire year.

God bless you all for your goodness and compassion.

    Love, Mom B.
